Tropical Fish Triptych

This set of tropical fish prints is a charming example of vintage “Florida Kitsch” decor, likely dating from the 1990s to early 2000s. As a curator, I find these pieces particularly interesting because they bridge the gap between scientific illustration and commercial home decor.

The Item: Tropical Fish Triptych

The frame houses three separate prints of popular marine and freshwater species. From top to bottom, the subjects appear to be:

1. Naso Tang (Orangespine Unicornfish): A popular saltwater aquarium fish known for its distinctive “mask” and orange tail spines.
2. Milletseed Butterflyfish (or similar species): Identifiable by the black spots on a light body and the vertical “eye bar” typical of butterflyfish.
3. Frontosa Cichlid: A striking freshwater fish native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa, easily recognized by its bold black vertical stripes and bluish hue.
